Charles enlisted in the 152nd PA 3rd Heavy Artillery, CO M, on 23 Feb 1864 and mustered out on 09 Nov 1865 at Ft. Monroe, VA.
Company M served as Siege Artillery, Army of the James, in siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond May, 1864, to May, 1865. Posted principally on the Bermuda Hundred front.
Charles entered the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers on 19 Feb 1895 (location unclear) - transferring to the Marion Indiana US National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers on 11 Mar 1899. He suffered from chronic diarrhea contracted in service.
Upon Charles death he was returned home to LaGrange County for burial under the direction of friends Ralph and Frank Ashley. He is buried next to his wife Mary who preceded him in death on 14 Feb 1891.
