WEST POINT -- Mr. Thomas Heflin Askew Sr., 89, of West Point, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at his residence.

Graveside services were held Friday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point with the Rev. Aaron McCullough officiating.

Mr. Askew is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Gene Shelnutt of Lanett, Joan Tingle of West Point, Barbara and Bob Rains of Pinckard and Vicky and Lamar Walden of Valley; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. and Wanda Askew Jr. of Lanett; his grandchildren, David Shelnutt of Atalla, Michael Shelnutt of Opelika, Eddie Tingle of West Point, Tom Askew III of Mount Airy, Ga., Brandi Quinton of Lanett, Joe Rains of Greensboro, N.C., Donna Rains of Dothan, Amy Oliver of Lake Harding and April Bailey of Valley; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Askew was a charter member of Flat Shoals Baptist Church in West Point. He was a retired employee of WestPoint Pepperell's Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works, with 34 years of service. Mr. Askew was a farmer.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946. Mr. Askew was the son of the late Tex Lector Crowder Askew and Edgar Earnest Askew. Mr. Askew was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hewell Bennett Askew, his sisters, Blanche Bartley and Lucille Hollis, his grandson, Thomas (Tommy) Weyman Tingle and his son-in-law, Edmond Earl Tingle, Sr.

Memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in Valley or the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Askew.
