He married Susan Brokenshire Gillett on 21 September 1903. He was a Presbyterian missionary, who served in Korea. He died in a Japanese Prison Camp called Los Banos International Camp in the Philippines. Herbert's granddaughter related that her grandfather, Herbert, died of starvation in that camp three days before General MacArthur returned and the detainees were rescued. She goes on to say that it was noted in the book about the rescue, "Escape At Dawn", that Herbert had been giving his wife, Susan, any food he was given. The Japanese came into the Korean mission stations and removed all missionaries, transporting them to their internment camps in the Philippines. There are 3 pages posted here as a Memorial Minute to him by his church with more details about him.
