Actor. He was a character actor in radio, television, movies and the theater whose crotchety but reassuring voice was as famous as his face. He was best known as the warmhearted managing editor of The Los Angeles Tribune on "Lou Grant," starring Ed Asner in the title role, which ran from 1977 to 1982. His voice became synonymous with the J.M. Smucker Co., which featured him in its jam and jelly commercials for more than 30 years with his trademark line--"With a name like Smucker's, it has to be good". (bio by: Ron Moody)
