Charles was the son of Charles and Charlotte Chambers Baker.
Charles was orphaned at age 14, and along with younger brothers, Walter and Jack, was brought to the Dr. Barnardo's Home Orphanage. All three brothers were sent to Canada as "Home Children" and assigned to different farms. An older brother, Percy, joined the Merchant Marines and was killed in WWI. Sisters Daisy, Charlotte, and Rose were taken in by relatives with Daisy and Rose emigrating to Canada at a later date.
In Canada, Charles lived on the Frank Fulsom farm and later owned a farm of 50 or more acres. He suffered from diabetes later in life.
Charles served as a corporal in the 4th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force #11040, in the First World War. He enlisted 22 September 1914 and served four years. He was wounded at least three times, including having his front teeth shot out. He was in the trenches at Ypres and Vimy Ridge. He received the 1914-15 star and the British War and Victory medals. He was discharged at St. Johns, New Brunswick on 19 March 1919 by reason of demobilization. At discharge, he was 24 years old, 5' 7 3/4" tall, fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.
Charles married Eveline Digby 19 January 1918 in Orsett, Essex, England. They had three children: Walter, Mildred and Edward, all born in Canada.
Charles is buried in the military section of the cemetery.
