Father McCawley was the son of the late Matthew L. and Viola A. Holl McCawley. Father received his early education in the Scranton Public Schools. Father received his B.A. in 1956, an S.T.B. in 1958 and his S.T.L. in 1960, all from Saint Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md. Father McCawley completed his studies for the priesthood and was ordained on June 11, 1960, in Saint Peter's Cathedral, Scranton. Father McCawley also earned a masters of social work degree from Marywood College in 1973 and a Ph.D. from Adelphia University in 1980. Father served as a teacher of theology at Bishop O'Reilly High School, Kingston and was a professor of philosophy and theology at King's College, Wilkes-Barre; Misericordia University, Dallas and Mary Immaculate Seminary, Northampton. He was a past president of the Board of Pastors of Notre Dame High School in Stroudsburg and also served as their Director of Development.Father McCawley served as an assistant pastor at Saint Elizabeth's, Bear Creek; Saint Joseph's, Nanticoke; Sacred Heart, Luzerne; and Holy Rosary in Scranton. From 1968 to 1971, Father McCawley served as a Missionary in Paraguay, South America. When he returned to the Scranton Diocese he served as an assistant pastor at Immaculate Conception, West Pittston; Annunciation, Williamsport; Sacred Heart, Luzerne; Saint John the Evangelist; Honesdale; Saint John the Evangelist; Wilkes-Barre and Saint Matthew's, East Stroudsburg. He served as assistant pastor of Saint Ignatius, Kingston; and Saint Mary's, Wyalusing. In 1979 Father McCawley was appointed to his first pastorate at Saint Joachim's in Meshoppen where he remained until his appointment on Sept. 9, 1982, as pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brodheadsville, where he remained until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus on July 15, 2009. He is survived by three brothers, Joseph M. of Moosic, Francis X. of Cheverly, Md., and James P. of Scranton.
