DEATH BY DROWNING - The first fatal river accident of the season occurred this morning at Kildonan, the victim being Miss Kate Chandler, a young lady sixteen years of age. It appears that Miss Chandler accompanied by her brother, George, started from the city for her home at St. Paul's Parish, by the public highway this morning but owing to the muddy state of the roads, after proceeding a distance they took to the river keeping as nearly possible in the center. When nearly opposite Kildonan Church, between 9 and 10 o'clock the ice on which they were walking suddenly gave way precipitating them both ino the stream. George, somehow or other, he does not know how, came up through the ice at some distance from where the two went down being in an almost exhausted condition. But of his sister there were no signs, she having been carried away by the current under the ice and disappeared. All that remained was a small parcel she had been carrying in her hand which was seen floating in the water. The unfortunate young lady was, as stated, about 16 years of age. She came up to Winnipeg on Sunday last to be received into the Baptist Church, and was returning home today when she met such a sad and untimely end.

Messrs. James and George Chandler last evening visited and identified the body of the late Kate Chandler, but owing to its advanced state of decomposition it was not thought advisable to bring the remains to the city. There were consequently interred in the church cemetery at St. Clements.
