|Death: ||Aug. 16, 1897|
San Diego County
Goolsby Woods was born 1824 in Cooper County, Missouri to Susan Jennings Woods and Charles Woods. He went to California prior to 1850 and was a miner in the 1850 census, located in Calaveras County, California.
He married Leah Isabelle Morris Belshe on 16 December 1860 in Sonoma, Sonoma County, California. She was previously married to William Belshe and he died about 1859. When they married, she had three children.
In 1870 the family lived in Cottonwood, Yolo County, California. The couple had their children prior to the 1860 census.
The family moved to Bear Valley, near Escondido in San Diego County, California, prior to the 1880 census. There is a valley in the area named for Goolsby--Woods Valley. According to a biography about James Madison Woods, their son, the family moved to San Diego County for Leah's health. A death certificate has not been found for her.
Goolsby had a ranch when the family lived in Yolo County and also when they were in San Diego County, California.
Goolsby died on 16 August 1897 and had a rather large estate. Leah remarried, to a man named James Crawford in about 1899 based on the 1900 census. James died 21 December 1900 and Leah was living with her son Charles in the 1910 census. She died in March 1913.
Goolsby has not been located in the 1860 census. It would be good to see what his possessions were valued at to see if he had located gold.
His story is one of my favorite descendant's stories. I am his 2nd great grandson.
