Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserves on 14 Aug 1942 at Peoria, Illinois and became a pilot. He trained fighter pilots during World War II and went into the reserves after the war and retired as a Colonel. Richard graduated from Colorado School of Mines with a degree in geophysical engineering and moved to Seattle in 1955 to work at the Boeing Co. He was called up during the Korean War, the Cuban Missle Crisis and Vietnam to serve.

Besides flying, Richard also loved to play Dixieland music on his trombone and play semi-pro football and rugby. He did these into his 70's. Richard also served as State Representative for the State of Washington from 1973 to 1989.

Richard and Sylvia were the parents of three children, two sons and a daughter, Cynthia (known as Cindy).
