Stanley R. "Barney" Benner, 93, of McAlisterville, PA, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:45 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at his home.

Born April 2, 1915, in McAlisterville, Juniata County, he was a son of the late John Wilson and Mary Elizabeth (Shivery) Benner. His wife of 71 years, Ethel R. (Frymoyer) Benner, whom he married on June 9, 1937, preceded him in death on July 18, 2008.

Surviving are: two daughters, Joan Musser and her husband Donald; Judy Fronk and her husband Stephen, all of McAlisterville, PA.

He also leaves behind four grandsons, Lance Musser and his wife Mindy, Cory Fronk and his wife Faith, Trevor Fronk and his wife Leah, Brent Musser and his wife Jill; six great-grandchildren, Landon Musser, Cora Musser, Julie Musser, Cy Fronk, Aden Fronk, Autumn Fronk; and many nieces and nephews.

Six brothers, Brainerd Benner, Raymond Benner, Herman Benner, Southard Benner, Sidney Benner and Edward Benner, as well as two sisters, Bess Lauver and Hilda Wible, preceded him in death, making him the last of his immediate family.

He was a 1932 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville, and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.

Stanley was previously a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville; at the time of his death he was a member of the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren and had been attending the Faith Community Church, McAlisterville, PA.

In earlier life, he worked for Leister Brothers Store, the L. Shellenberger Shirt Factory, Clair Ehrenzeller's Hatchery, the East Salem Shirt MFG. Co. and the Richfield Shirt MFG. Co., and later he and his wife Ethel owned and operated Benner's Self Service, McAlisterville, until retiring in 1973, after many years of service to the community. He also worked for the Clair C. Stuck Funeral Home, McAlisterville, PA.

"Barney" was an avid gardener and loved to spend time with his family, especially attending many of his grandsons' athletic events and other activities.

Barney also enjoyed honoring and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He lived his life as a testimony of his love for his Lord. He enjoyed opportunities to speak and share the "good news" many times throughout his life, at local churches.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, from the East Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Barr officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville, PA.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service, Thursday at the church.
