Lewis F. Jones, 100, of Pearl Street died Saturday at his home after a brief illness.
He was born in South Portland, a son of William H. and Florence Curtis Jones, attended South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School.
"He was a good person, easy to get along with," said a son, Gordon E. Jones of Windham.
Mr. Lewis worked in the logging business, surveying timber, felling trees and occasionally "riding the logs" downriver to the mill. He owned a portable mill and sawed the logs himself.
He later worked for 28 seasons in the maintenance department at the former Bay of Naples Hotel, and then as a machinist at the Portland Co. He retired as maintenance foreman for Burroughs Co. around 1980.
Afterward he did odd jobs, working as an electrician at Scarborough Downs, and at Earl W. Noyes as a security guard.
"He was active. He hunted and fished up to the last two years," said his stepson, Raymond Frank of Portland. "He was a remarkable man."
Mr. Lewis built a camp in Denmark in the 1950s, which his step-grandson, John Davis, remembered visiting as a boy.
"My grandfather's always done a lot for the family," he said. "He painted the porch when he was 98, and didn't want anybody helping him. He wanted to do it by himself, as usual. He did the grocery shopping all the way until this fall."
When Mr. Lewis turned 100 on Oct. 27, his entire family, including relatives from Chicago, gathered to throw him a big party.
"The cake had 100 candles, and when he tried to blow them out, he started a little fire," Davis recalled. "Everybody was laughing. We had a good time."
Mr. Jones was a 32nd degree Mason.
A daughter, Frances Chandler, and a stepdaughter, Doris Davis, both died previously.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Jones of Portland; two sons, Gordon E. of Windham and Lewis Jr. of Chicago; a stepson, Raymond Frank of Portland; a stepdaughter, Evelyn DePietro of Scarborough; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
At his request, there are no visiting hours. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park in the spring.
