Birth: Sep. 17, 1888
Death: Mar. 7, 1935

Myrtle was the eldest daughter of Enoch Grigsby Mays Jr., born Madison County, Florida, and Miss Eula Mims, born likely Macon County, Alabama. Myrtle was born in Belton, Bell County Texas in 1888. Her father died when she was about ten years old and the family moved to Hico,Texas. In about 1905 the surviving members of the family moved to Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas where Myrtle worked in the millinery/dry goods profession. She, her sister, and mother moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1921 to 1815 Lipscomb Street, and Myrtle opened her own millinery shop in downtown Ft. Worth. Her death certificate based on information provided by her husband, Ward Baker, in 1935 gave her birth year as 1895 and that date is inscribed on her tombstone, but more reliable records indicate that she was actually born in 1888. Myrtle married briefly in 1924 to a man named Johnson, but the marriage did not last. She married a second time in 1927 and this is likely when she subtracted seven years from her age. She was actually 39 years old when she married rather than 32. After marrying, she moved to Greeley, Colorado and then Cheyenne, Wyoming with her husband who ran a dry goods store in these locations and she was killed in a freak automobile accident in Lamar, Colorado in March 1935 while returning home after visiting her mother and sister over the Christmas Holidays in Fort Worth. She had no known children. She was brought back to Ft. Worth to be buried and is interred with her sister and mother at Greenwood Cemetery. She was well known in business circles and had an elaborate funeral and many renowned persons of Ft. Worth and Wyoming attended her funeral.
