JoEllen was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1948 but made her home in Indianapolis for over sixty years. She was graduated from Southport High School and awarded the Outstanding Music Student at her graduation. She was talented in both music and art and played first chair trumpet in the band, performed with vocal groups, and became accomplished on the piano and guitar. She won First Place in an art exhibit at the Indiana State Fair and drew the illustrations for two books.

She was a graduate of the University of Indianapolis with degrees in both voice and instrumental music. JoEllen performed with Joel Grey, Sid Caesar, Ann Miller, Carol Lawrence, Betty Grable and others at Starlight Musicals and played the leading role in "Hello, Dolly" at Footlight musicals. She formed her own band, "Lady and Friends," and played in supper clubs in Indianapolis and at the French Lick Hotel.

Teaching at Wilking's and Arthur's Music Studios, she also gave private lessons in both voice and instrumental music in her home. She taught music in Perry Township and Indianapolis Public Schools. For ten years she played the piano at Von Maur's at the Greenwood Shopping Mall.

She was a member of the Indianapolis Branch of the National League of American Pen Women.

JoEllen was an active member of the Garfield Park Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her greatest accomplishments came during her 25 years of full-time volunteer service. She found great joy in helping her neighbors learn the practical value of the Bible. Some of her Bible studies were even conducted in the women's prison and nursing homes around Indianapolis.

Her family and friends will miss her loving presence. JoEllen was a dear friend to many, and her faith served as an inspiration to the lives she touched.

Her first husband, Stephen Manship, died in 2008. Survivors include her husband, two sons, and one grandson. Other survivors include her mother, her brother and two sisters, three nephews, and one niece. She was also the granddaughter of Dr. William Gear Spencer, a former president of both Franklin College and Hillsdale College.
