George Lewis Aliverti, 88, passed away on February 17, 2007, at his home in Walla Walla, Washington. George was born January 9, 1919, in Walla Walla to Italian immigrants, Joseph and Maria Batistina Pinza Aliverti. George came from a family of 8 children. His baby sister was stillborn and his baby brother, Donte, died in infancy.

George joined the National Guard in 1936 where he won many boxing tournaments. He was honorably discharged as a Private 1st Class in 1939. George and Lois Marie Tolliver were married on his birthday, January 9, 1940 in Walla Walla and was the first marriage to take place in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. They were married for 60 years.

George was a truck gardener and enjoyed camping with his family and friends. He designed the first carrot digger that loaded the carrots onto the truck from a potato digger. At the end of harvest, they went to the Tucannon River, Wallowa Lake, or the Imnaha River. He was an avid fisherman and loved to fish for sturgeon and trout. He once went salmon fishing in the ocean and hooked a 7 foot shark. When he pulled it up to the boot, the shark looked him in the eye, broke the line and took off. He never went fishing in the ocean again.

He took care of his invalid wife at the home for 9 years until she passed away. He was always willing to help family and friends in harvest. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He had a quick sense of humor and he loved crossword puzzles and playing cribbage. He loved to play poker at the Fire Station with friends. He was an active member in his church and helped with the Christmas decorations and fixing boxes for the poor at Thanksgiving and Christmas. He helped box clothing for the poor overseas. He also volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul's warehouse and helped fix bicycles, lawn mowers and various other appliances along with the children's toys.

He was a longtime volunteer firefighter for District #4 at Station 2 for 27 years. George was appropriately named as it means "Tiller of the Soil" and George was a farmer his entire life. He will be deeply missed by family, neighbors, and friends.

George is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; two sisters; three grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving his is special friend and second love, and numerous nieces and nephews.
