American Folk Figure. A young man of African-American descent, he was the audience member killed at the Altamont Speedway in California, during a concert by the Rolling Stones, on December 6, 1969. Hunter had returned to the stage area, drew a revolver, and was then stabbed and beaten to death by a member of the Hell's Angels named Alan Passaro. The incident was caught on camera. Passaro was later arrested, charged with Hunter's murder, and acquitted, having claimed self-defense. In 1985, Passaro's dead body was found floating in the Anderson Reservoir with $10,000 in his pocket. The story became the focus of the 1970 film, "Gimme Shelter," and is also the focus of an urban legend stating that the song, "Sympathy For The Devil," was playing during the murder, though the band was actually performing "Under My Thumb." On May 21, 2005, the Alameda County, Sheriff's Office officially announced that the case was closing.
