Birth: May 5, 1814
Ayre, Isle of Man
Death: May 3, 1876
Middle, Isle of Man

Simon Bell's death was the result of a fall from a cliff while walking along the cliffs of Douglas Head. He was with his son, James, and insisted on climbing down the cliffs. James tried to dissuade him but to no avail. Simon started down the cliffs and James waited for him for some time and then tried to go down the same route Simon had taken but was unable to. He tried a different route and when arriving on a ledge, looked down and saw Simon lying on his back at the bottom about 10 feet from the water. James realized there had been an accident and was determined to get to his father at any risk, falling some 30 feet in his descent, sustaining only a bruised foot. He administered what aid he could to his father and climbed back up the cliffs to get aid from the Douglas Head lighthouse where the lighthouse keepers launched their boat and went to retrieve Simon. They found Simon just barely alive, however, he died before he was brought ashore. He had fractured his skull, and "accidental death" was the verdict of the jury.
