Private, 10th Anti-Aircraft Battery, CAC. Son of Mrs Kate M Abernethy; born November 24, 1896, at Altona. Enlisted at Peoria, May 27, 1918; to Jefferson Barracks; overseas July 14, 1918; in the service 242 days; discharged January 25, 1919.
Ralph L Abernethy, 88, of Altona, died Thursday at 9:05 AM in St. Mary's Hospital, Galesburg.
He was born in Walnut Grove Township, Knox County, on November 24, 1896. He married Alice D Thayer near Woodhull on September 15, 1924.
Surviving are his wife and one sister, Mattie McGaan, Altona.
He was reared and educated in Altona area, where he farmed all his life.
He was a member of the United Church of Altona, served as a church trustee and elder, was superintendent of the Sunday school and was a member of the choir for many years. He served as a rural school director and was a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau. He was a veteran of World War I, and was a charter member of Ekstedt-Hurr American Legion Post 390, Altona.
Funeral will be Sunday at 2 PM in Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home, Oneida, with the Rev. Gordon Goodwill officiating. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Altona American Legion Post. There will be no visitation.
Memorials may be made to his church, the family said.
