Birth: Apr., 1840
Estill County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Jul. 30, 1921
Powell County
Kentucky, USA

Pvt. John Tilford Abner {Abney} was the firstborn of Clement and Polly Chaney Abner both Virginia natives. He was one of seven children. Clement was a farmer, and John would follow in his footsteps.

There is some discrepancy about the exact year of John's birth. His marker notes it as 1840, his death certificate says 1841. In the records, John often goes by "Tilford Abner".

John grew up on the family farm, and in 1860 as the tide of the Civil War was approaching, John was living in Owsley County, KY with his birth family.

On 8/4/1862 John enlisted as a Private in the US Army at Irvine, KY. He was a member of several companies {E, D & M} of the 14th Kentucky Cavalry. John was mustered out on 3/28/1864 at Camp Nelson, KY.

After his service, John became a lodger and farm laborer in Irvine, Estill Co., KY. On 2/15/1874 John married Miss Minerva Ann Hatton. Minerva was the daughter of William and Mary Pollie {Polly} Maston Hatton.

The couple made their home in Powell, KY. where John worked as a miner. In the 1880 Federal Census, John and Minerva Ann are noted as having three children: Sherman, Emaline, and Christopher. Daughter, Patsy would follow. Patsy Abney would apply for the military headstone for her father in 1937, 16 years after his death. In 1890 John applied for a pension and the application noted he was an invalid.

The Abner {Abney} family moved to a farm at Hardwick's Creek, Powell Co., KY, where they were residing in 1900. Son Christopher and daughter Patsy were living on the farm at that time. By 1910 the Abners were in Stanton, Powell Co., KY farming there. Patsy was the only child left at home at age 24.

In 1916, Minerva Ann died, leaving John a widower. At age 78 he moved to Virden Powell Co., KY. to live with his son, Sherman, wife Polly and their five children. Polly's mother, Christine Nolan, a widow, brought the number of family members to nine.

John died in 1921, five years after Minerva Ann, and rests by her side.
