Following their marriage in Essex, Ontario, Canada,in 1897, the couple moved from Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan, to their first home in Needles, San Bernardino County, California. During his long career with the Santa Fe Railroad, John held the positions of Superintendent of the Arizona Division, Superintendent of the San Francisco Terminal, and Superintendent of the San Joaquin Valley and San Francisco Coastal Division. In public, he gave great credit to the women who had made possible the successful careers of their railroad husbands. Following his retirement from the ATSF 31 December 1939, John, again, always supported by Susan, served as the first Chairman of the Fresno Civil Service Commission (1943-1949) and on the rationing board during World War II.
