Whitney was born in Canada and immigrated to the U.S. He moved to Dayton, Ohio and became friends with Arthur Jones. Whitney was a butcher for Sawaya Meat Market in Dayton for 40 years. In October 1930, he married Arthur's sister, Ethelene Jones. They had two daughters: Genevieve and Geraldine. He became an American citizen after the outbreak of WWII but was frustrated that he could not serve because of a medical issue.

Whitney and Ethelene made a home for Ethelene's brother Edgar's wife and children during WWII. His wife had Japanese parents but had been born in Hawaii where Edgar was stationed for years. Even though Edgar was fighting for the US, his family would have gone to internment camps if Whitney and Ethelene had not taken them in.

Whitney loved his grandchildren very much. He was always bringing them toys or trinkets.

After Whitney and Ethelene retired, they moved to Hernando County, Florida. He died in Brooksville, Florida.
