Grandville Man is Killed When Car Hits Auto
Cornelius Blackport, 43, of 889 Sheridan Avenue S.W.,
Accident Victim
-Cornelius Blackport, 43, Grandville Avenue barber, was fatally injured when the automobile, which he was driving, was struck by a north bound Grandville street car at B Street and Grandville Avenue S.W., Sunday evening at 6:30. He died an hour later at Butterworth hospital.
According to witnesses, Blackport, who was returning his machine to the garage on Grandville Avenue after spending the afternoon motoring with members of his family, drove west on B Street onto Grandville Avenue directly in the path of the oncoming car. He was thrown under the automobile, which passed over his body and he was dragged by the street car for a distance of approximately 45 feet. He was badly cut about the head and was unconcious when taken from beneath the car.
CAR RUNNING SLOW
Motorman Albert Shipley said his street car was traveling at a speed of 12 miles per hour and the he did not see the machine until it was directly in his path. Shattered glass from the street car vestibule, which cut him about the face and arms, prevented him from bringing the car to an immediate stop, he said. He was cut by flying glass.
Carlton Stevens, conductor of the car, verified Shipley's statement that the car was traveling about 12 miles an hour. None of the passengers on the car were injured.
INQUEST TO BE HELD
Mr. Blackport had conducted a barber shop at 902 Grandville Avenue for a number of years and was well know in the Grandville Avenue District. He was a widower and resided at 889 Sheridan Avenue S.W., with his son, Henry Blackport. He is also survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
An inquest will be held, Coroner Simon LeRoy announced last night. Funeral Services will be held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
