Service is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Colbert Methodist Church for Mrs. Emma Clem, pioneer citizen of Colbert who died Monday in a Denison hospital, With burial in Colbert Cemetery, Dalton-Holmes Funeral Home in charge.
She was born July 15, 1897, in Colbert, Indian Territory. She married Ralph Noel Clem September 15,1936. He died in 1947.
Mrs. Clem was appointed postmaster in Colbert August 3, 1925 and served in that capacity until she retired in 1966. She remained until completion and dedication of the new post office in June of 1966.
She delayed her retirement in order to make sure the new post office was built. It is the fourth location of a post office in Colbert and Mrs. Clem had worked in them all. When she was named postmaster to suceed Mrs. Cecil Hamilton in 1925, the post office was in a grocery next to the present post office.
She moved it to the O.L. Davidson Drug Store but those quarters were outgrown when the Denison Dam construction started. Fire leveled that one to the ground in 1954 and she set up shop in the H.R. Williamson Grocery until a new office was provided.
She stayed only briefly after the present post office was completed in 1965, completing her 41st year before retiring.
The Colbert post office was commissioned July 20, 1881, with Charles B. Kingsbury as the first postmaster. When he retired both Mrs. Clem's grandfather, in 1890 and her father, in 1911 served as postmasters and when she became postmaster it was in the original building used since 1881.
She was a member of the Colbert Methodist Church for more than 65 years. She was a member of the National Association of Postmasters in the U.S. and the Oklahoma Chapter. She was a member of the National Assocoation of Retired Federal Employees and was Colbert chairman of the Heart Fund and March of Dimes and other drives.
Survivors include a sister, Dr. Frances Revis of Colbert; one step-daughter Margaret Clem of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
