Obituary
Paula (Brazelton) Creekmore - Clark - June 24, 1946 - January 20, 2017
Paula Creekmore Clark, born June 24, 1946, was declared in her birth announcement to be "A Howling Success." If success is measured by both the impact one has on their family, friends and community and the light they shine into the world then this was true from her first to her last moment. Paula grew up in Oakland, California, the second of four children. In her early years her fun-loving personality was balanced by her dedication to the hard work of being the primary caregiver to her younger siblings David and Kari.
She later attended Chico State University and after graduating, she spent time as a teacher and a flight attendant before launching her career as a business owner of the local Sandler Sales Institute in Eugene, Oregon. Paula was an active member of Lane Leaders, and in all of her professional life she never lost track of her teaching roots. She always sought to help others find their inner talents and strengths. Paula had a knack for using humor to form a genuine connection with people she met, usually having at least one inside joke with everyone. Her family and friends describe her as having an effervescent charisma.
For many years as a single mother of two, she personally experienced the joys and challenges of raising a son with special needs. She had a passion for ensuring that the families of children with special needs were supported, and that their children would be welcomed members of our community and offered fulfilling opportunities in life. This led her to serve, over her many years in Eugene, as a Board Member for organizations such as ARC of Lane County, Oregon Supported Living Program (OSLP), and United Way.
It was in Paula's work with ARC that she met the love of her life, Tom Clark. In May 1992, when she was the President of the Lane County Chapter and Tom was the State President of ARC, they both attended a statewide convention. They met for coffee and were inseparable ever after. Embracing each other's lives, they brought together an extended family of numerous children, step-children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends in Eugene, Bend, and the surrounding areas.
Paula and Tom hosted what began as a neighborhood block party and quickly morphed into a cherished community event--the "In Poor Taste Party." Attendees would come dressed in costumes that flirted with or outright demolished the boundaries of propriety. Never crass, the party was always aimed at helping everyone let go of the every day and embrace the whimsical.
In 2008, Paula and Tom decided to tie the knot by throwing a surprise-wedding event at the Thanksgiving gathering of their families. Officiated by her brother David, who was outfitted in a graduation robe and accompanied by their dog, Riley (wearing a tux bib), they walked up the aisle to the sound of the family playing kazoos.
Paula's life was filled with challenges but was distinguished by her passion for inclusivity, her kind sense of humor, her love of family and friends, her willingness to always roll up her sleeves, and her fabulously welcoming hugs. In every way, she was truly a howling success.
Paula passed away on January 20, 2017, at the age of 70, surrounded by family. She is survived by her husband, Tom; their children and step-children: David, Kate, Karen, Danica, Pejvak, and Aaron; their many grandchildren; her siblings: David, Kari and Barbara and her loving and extensive family. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday January 28 at The Shedd, 868 High Street, Eugene, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The family welcomes donations made to Oregon Supported Living Program in Lane County.
