Wife Elizabeth Matlock applied for widow's pension in August 1929. It was rejected for failure to prove service. It was filed in Taylor Co., Texas. Her address was 1201 Mulberry St., Abilene, Texas. She stated that her husband died in October 17, 1914 in Jones Co., Texas., She was married to him in July, 1862 in Phelps County., Missouri. She stated that she was born February 14, 1845 in Phelps County., Missouri. She had lived in Texas since 1900. She thought that perhaps her husband address at time of enlistment was Salem, Missouri.(Dent Co.). An affidavit was attached, signed by J.W. Humphreys and Otis Wylie who stated: "They have known Stephen West Matlock 45 and 26 years respectively having been intimately acquainted with him during time and up to his death in 1914. That each married a daughter of said Matlock, deceased and affiants are 67 and 45 years respectively. That each has often talked with said Matlock, deceased, concerning his experiences as a Confederate soldier, and each has heard him tell of the different battles in which he engaged; that he was a high-type honorable citizen, and they know from such conversations that said Stephen West Matlock actually served about three years as a Confederate soldier and was honorably discharged as such. That Mr. Matlock never made any attempt to get a pension and left no records for his widow or anyone else in so far as known, and that therefore his army record in detail is not known.
