Former welterweight boxing kingpin during the 1900's. He won the welterweight title for the first time in his career in 1900 when he defeated "Mysterious" Billy Smith. He held the title for about six months before losing it to Matty Matthews. He regained his crown from Matthews in 1901 before losing it again to Joe Walcott. He never regained the title again.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers Association, St. Bridget's Catholic church in Scammon & the Knights of Columbus.
He married Matilda McNamara 1 Jun 1898 in Scammon, Ks.
Survivors include his wife, daughters Mrs R.W. Dixon & Mrs C.H. Benage, sons Harold J., & James J, 10 grandchildren & two great grandchildren.
