The first child and son born to union of James Garland Laird and Mary Elizabeth Parry, David Arthur Laird was born at "Contentment" near Lexington in Rockbridge County.
As a very young boy, David removed to Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia with his family after the Civil War.
Living with his widowed mother at 26 years of age, he had never married at the time of his death.
