They initially settled in Cottage Grove, Dane County, Wisconsin. Samuel found work as a day laborer. In 1868 Samuel purchased 40 acres of land in Glencoe, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, and the couple began farming.
The couple had 14 children, 13 of whom were: John B., Maria(h)Jane, Margaret, Martha, Thomas Edward, Samuel George, Jr., Elisabeth, Hugh, Anna, James George, William Arthur, Rebecca, and Robert Daniel.
Samuel and Maria raised their children in Glencoe, and after retirement moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1889. Samuel died there in 1890 of "Brain Congestion". Maria outlived him by six years, having moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to live with one of their children the July before she died in 1896 of "Rheumatism".
They were both buried in Fountain City, Buffalo County Wisconsin; a beautiful town at the foot of the bluffs, along the Mississippi River, close to the farm they had worked for so many years.
