Val Edward "Doc" Hoffinger
Birth: Jan. 1, 1901
Death: Mar. 22, 1976

Professional Hockey Player. He began his hockey career in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and made the National Hockey League when his contract was bought by the Chicago Blackhawks during 1927 to 1928. In doing so, he bacame the first Russian-born player in the NHL. He remained with the team for another season before embarking on a vagabond journey through the minor leagues. In 1935 he was prepared to play in Oklahoma City when an unexpected offer arrived. The German Reichsport Fuehrer wired an offer for Hoffinger to coach the 1936 German Olympic ice hockey team and to continue the program after the Games. Unable to spend his salary outside of Germany, he enrolled in orthopedics and chiropody. Hoffinger returned to Canada as the representative of a German shoe insert manufacturer. (bio by: 1weasel)
