"RECENT DEATHS

Rev. J. C. R. Ewing, D. D., LL. D., one of the most prominent ministers of the Presbyterian church, died suddenly Thursday night at his home in Princeton, N.J. Dr. Ewing was a son of James Henry and Eleanor Rhea Ewing, and was born in Rural Valley, Armstrong county, June 23, 1854. He was graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1876 and in 1897 was graduated from the Western Theological Seminary. the same year he was ordained as a missionary and was sent to India under the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, and spent forty years in that field. His last work in that county was as professor in the Theological Seminary at Lahore. From 1888 to 1918 he was president of Foreman Christian College at Lahore, the leading educational institution of the Presbyterian church in India. The following four years he was president of the Indian Council of the Presbyterian church. From 1890 to 1907 he served as dean of the faculty of arts at the University of the Punjaub, and from 1910 to 1917 was vice chancellor of the University. On behalf of his educational efforts he was decorated by King Edward VII of England, who conferred on him the Kaiserhind gold medal. King George V in 1915 made him a Companion of Indian Empire, and in 1915 and at the conclusion of his active work in the Indian field made him a Knight Commander of the Indian Empire, which honor gave him the title of Sir James C. R. Ewing. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss his widow and the following children: Mrs. Vernon Jackson, of Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. Robert Goheen, wife of Dr. Robert Goheen, medical missionary at Benguria, India, and Mrs. Nancy Lucas, wife of the Rev. Edmund Lucas, of Lahore, India; two sons, Sherrard Ewing, of New York, and J. C. R. Ewing, Jr., of Princeton, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. J. A. Hawk, of New Kensington, and five brothers, John A. Ewing, of Denver, Col.; Ira C. Ewing, of Wilkinsburg; Rev. Joseph L. Ewing, of Rahway, N.J.; Judge Robert M. Ewing, of Pittsburgh, and W. Howard Ewing, of Saltsburg. Funeral services were conducted at Saltsburg Monday afternoon."
