An artist and poet at heart; he held many jobs, his longest was the buying and storing of potatoes; he developed and built a warehouse with a ventilation system in Manawa, Wisconsin.
After cutting his toenails with a jack-knife, he developed gangrene. He had his toe amputated, then his foot, then his leg; eventually died with the infection.

MARTVILLE – Ernest Axtell, 87, a retired farmer, died Wednesday afternoon in Sennett. He came to Martville 40 years ago from Wisconsin and was the son of the late Samuel and Adeline Axtell. His wife Emma died in 1952.
Mr. Axtell was a 50 year member of Manawa, Wis., Masonic Lodge, member of IOOF in Wisconsin, and member of the Martville Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Minard Peacock of Pulaski and Mrs. Dorothy Hudson of Martville; a son, Samuel E. of Martville; a sister, Mrs. Emma Klein of Croton-on-the-Hudson; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at the Becker Funeral Home, Red Creek, at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, with burial in Martville Cemetery. The Rev. Raymond Ginther of Martville Methodist Church will officiate. A Masonic service will be held at the cemetery. Friends may call today.
