John P. Bates, 76, of North Port, Fla., and formerly of Medway, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at the Venice Florida Medical Center.
He was the husband of Catherine M. (Furey) Bates, to whom he was married 54 years.
Born in Boston, he was a son of the late Peter and Edna (Burns) Bates. A resident of North Port for the past seven years, he previously resided in Medway.
Mr. Bates was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a terminal manager in the transportation industry for many years.
Mr. Bates was a member and former president of the Irish Round Tower. He loved boating, traveling and music, and was an avid gardener.
Besides his wife, he leaves seven children: Susan Gray of Medway [MA], Janet Eisenberg of North Andover [MA], Nancy Gage of Duluth, GA, John Bates of North Richland Hills, Texas, Peter Bates of North Kingstown, RI, Brian Bates of Mims, FL and Mark Bates of Uxbridge [MA]; a sister, Joan Cronan of Medway [MA]; 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday, May 9, at 9 a.m. from the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St., Medway [MA], followed by a funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church, 151 Village St., in Medway, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Medway. Calling hours on Sunday, May 8, are from 4 to 8 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bishop's Annual Fund, care of San Pedro Catholic Church, Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL 34287.
