Jeff married Sophia Lea Shipman on September 16, 1939, in Oklahoma. In the 1940s, they moved to Niles (Fremont), California. Sophia worked as a nurse in the hospital at the Masonic Home in Decoto (Union City), California, for 35 years, where she dedicated herself to the care of the patients. She retired from there at the age of 62. Jeff and Sophia spent their retirement years loving and caring for their family.
In 2000, Jeff and Sophia moved to Tracy, California, to help with the care of four great-grandsons. In May of 2006, they moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon to be near their youngest son and his family, Larry Barker and his wife, Judi and Sophia's siblings who also live in the area.
