Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 12th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned on September 30, 1862, and leading the unit in engagements at Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Jenkin's Ferry and Camden, Arkansas. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on February 13, 1865, and was mustered out of service on June 30, 1865.
