A shoemaker by profession, John Getz served in the Union Army during the Civil War from 27 Aug [mustered in 7 Sep] 1864 - 2 Jun 1865.
He served as a Private in, Co. I, 184th Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. which was part of the 1st Bde, 2nd Div, II Corps, Army of the Potomac.
As such, he saw action at the Siege of Petersburg, VA and the breakout and pursuit of the Army of Northern Virginia with actions at Saylor's Creek and Appomattox.
He survived the war and returned home to ply his trade. He was buried 9 Jul 1908.
[Note: Death Certificate states: birth - July 22, 1832; death - June 30, 1908; age - 75 yrs, 11 mos, 8 das; burial - July 2, 1908. However the Death Certificate has several factual errors (e.g. - it lists his brother Isaac as his father) therefore these dates are suspect vice the grave marker.]
