John was born the third of five children to Robert Caldwell, a native of Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth Ann (Coles)Caldwell,originally from Ohio. His father died while John was still a young boy, seven years later his mother remarried to William Huddleston.
In the spring on 1864 John entered the Twentieth Ohio Infantry and was attached to Gen. Sherman's command and served with him during him memorable campaign, being discharged at Springfield in July 1865.
On Christmas day of that year, in Noble County Ohio he married Abigail Neptune, who was born in Belmont Ohio. In the spring of 1867 they moved to Missouri and for two years lived at Dresden, Pettis County. There he engaged in milling at which he worked until 1880, Moved to Henry County in 1877 when he erected the mill on Deepwater. In 1869 he purchased a tract of land and in 1875 moved upon it. He cultivated 160 acres and handled a number of hogs and cattle. He and his wife were identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church and in politics he was a Republican. He stood prominently among the enterprising men of Walker Township and took an active interest in all matters of moral and educational tendencies. He was the father of eight children: Charles W., William Hampton, Nettie Jane, Francis Marion, Flora Ellen May, Florence Matilda, Clifford Levy and one that died in infancy.
