American Folk Figure. Lura and her husband Chandler Munson Church were among the pioneers of Albion, Michigan, coming from New York state in 1834 to Albion, Calhoun, MI.

In 1851, the Church's moved from Albion to Nevada County, California between Grass Valley and Wheatland. They had left their team of work horses behind in Albion, MI, and decided that they could use them at their California "Buckeye Ranch." Lura therefore traveled back to Albion by herself "to fetch the horses" as the story goes, and subsequently drove them westward across the continent from Albion to California. The story inspired the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) to feature Lura's accomplishment on its legendary radio program "Death Valley Days," which aired nationwide on December 10, 1942. The title of that evening's program was "Round Trip to Michigan." Lura's husband Chandler died in California in 1857 and is interred there on the Buckeye Ranch. She remained at their ranch until 1869 before returning to Albion to spend her remaining years.

Her husband Chandler is buried at the Buckeye Ranch in Rough and Ready Township in Nevada County, CA (Penn Valley post office), but a cenotaph for him was engraved as part of the tombstone erected here in Riverside Cemetery when Lura passed away.
