Sarah is the daughter of James THORN and Sarah Elizabeth NICHOLS. She was born in York Co., South Carolina on 3 Oct 1829. In the 1850 census we find Sarah age 19, living with her family in York Co., South Carolina. Two visits before the THORN household we find a William H. MERRITT age 17 living in the FARIS household. This could very well be Sarah's first husband. There is also a William H. MERRITT also same age at visit #388 in York Co., so either one could be Sarah's William. On 18 Jul 1855 William MERRITT and Sarah THORN marry.1
In 1860 William and Sarah are still in York Co., South Carolina and have 2 children, Dr. F. age 3 and Sarah E. age 4 months. They are just one visit away from Sarah's parents, James and Sarah Elizabeth THORN (they are possibly living on her parents land). Living with Sarah's parents are a daughter, Elizabeth THORN and and "infant" age 11 months. This entry is interesting for several reasons. The census taker wrote out the last name for every person on the page (not just ditto marks), but this entry just says "infant" with no last name. The "infant" is a girl. Who is this "infant girl"? Is it Elizabeth's daughter?
At some point William and Sarah were kicked off of the THORN property.1 "Dolph" (a nephew of William's) even mentions this in one of his letters to William.2 It might have something to do with whatever William was being accused of. And could it have something to do with the 2 Merritt girls living with James and Sarah THORN in 1870????
Sarah's first husband, William MERRITT dies 20 May 1864. His FindAGrave memorial says he is buried in a Mass Grave in the Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia. On 6 July 1864 "Dolph" writes to his Aunt Sarah about William: "I have not been hurt, otherwise me and brother Jasper has come through and has not been hurt while others have sunk and is now under the clods of the earth and your husband is numbered with them. He did not speak after he was shot. I saw him after he was carried out. He was shot through the shoulder and the was ...... through his heart. He was buried near the battle field. I did not get anything that he had with him. He had been searched. His nap sack is with the baggage, I will try and have it taken care of if I can but the blanket that he had with him was stolen. I will attend to his business as I promise to do the best that I can for you and send it to you. And then on 29 Aug 1964 "Dolph" again writes to Sarah: "Aunt Adaline we have not drawn any money for you yet and I can not say when Capt. Glenn will arrange it but he will.....as soon as he can attend to it and then I will send it to you if I have the opportunity."
Probably in 1865 Joseph CAROTHERS and Sarah marry. In December of 1865 J.A. CAROTHERS (Sarah's now husband) files for Letters of Administration of Sarah's late husband's estate.
By 1870 Sarah and Joseph Addison CAROTHERS are found in Fort Mill, York Co., South Carolina with 3 of Sarah's children from her first marriage to William MERRITT, Doc Franklin, Sarah Elizabeth and Thomas Clarence and the first 3 of Joseph and Sarah's children, William - 4, Mary L. "Mollie" - 2 and Nancy - 1. In the 1870 census we also find there are 2 MERRITT girls living with Sarah's parents, James and Sarah Elizabeth THORN. Elizabeth is still there along with Narcisca MERRITT -11 and Margaret MERRITT -7. At first I wondered if the two MERRITT girls (Margaret and Narcisca) are William and Sarah MERRITT'S children. Floyd CHIO doesn't think they are. But now I wonder if they are William MERRITT's and Elizabeth's and that is the reason William and Sarah were kicked of her father's property. More research needs to be done on Margaret and Narcisca.
In 1880 Joseph and Sarah are living in Steele Creek, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina with 3 children. Nancy (that was 1 in 1870) is missing in this census, possibly has died as nothing more has been found about her, and Ross is the youngest at 9.
The 1890 census has been destroyed so in 1900 we find Joseph and Sarah with Ross and Louvica (very hard to read) listed as a daughter. This Louvica is believed to be "Mollie's" daughter, Lula Mae, born out of wedlock. The age is correct and Lula Mae is not found anywhere else in the census. I have wondered why she wasn't living with Mary L. "Molly" and William BRANDON. This census says that Sarah is the mother of 6 children with 6 still living. So, if that is correct that would be her 3 children with William MERRITT and 3 with Joseph, it doesn't take into account Nancy who only appeared in the 1870 census.
Sarah dies 25 Jun 1904 at the age of 74 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Sarah had a will but Joseph did not. Everything was in Sarah's name and she left it all to their son Ross. None of Joseph and Sarah's other children are mentioned in her will. The will was dated Oct 1902. Joseph dies less than one month after Sarah. Why was everything in Sarah's name? Why are none of their other children listed in her will? Was Joseph ill? Her will does state that Ross cared for her in her old age and that if she dies first Ross is to care for Joseph to end of his life. Sarah is buried with her husband in the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. They share a grave marker.
