Harry Evelyn Ballard was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight in England to John and Martha (nee BURRIDGE) Ballard in March of 1850. In 1879 he married Bertha Adams. Together they had 11 children, though only 9 would survive. The family immigrated to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York where he was employed by the Vanderbilts as a yacht builder/repairer.
