Buhl Woman, 100 Years Old Wednesday, Has Outlived Seven of Eight Children.
Buhl,Idaho March 8, 1949-Outliving all her 11 brothers and sisters and all but one of her eight children, Mrs Cynthia A. Abell of Buhl, will note her 100th birthday anniversary Wednesday. No celebration is planned but she is receiving congratulatory messages from friends throughout the nation.
Bedfast since 1948 as the result of a broken hip, Mrs. Abell is being cared for at the home of her 65 year old daughter, Mrs. I. C. McPherron, 912 Robertson street, who reports Mrs. Abell still eats and sleeps well but her eyesight and hearing are falling.
Mrs. Abell was born March 9, 1849, in St. Joseph, MO. the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rhudy. She is a member of the Christian church which she joined 50 years ago.
Longevity is something of a tradition in Mrs. Abell's family. Her great grandmother lived two years after crossing the plains in an ox cart in 1849 at the age of 101. Her grandmother, mother and one sister each died at the age of 75. Her father died youg from a sunstroke when he was 47.
Mrs. Abell recalls many events of the Civil war. Her father fought for the north in a Missouri regiment. Three uncles, in a Virginia regiment fighting for the north, were captured and imprisoned. One died while imprisoned, the other two were released.
She remembers she and her mother picked blackberries at St. Joseph and walked six miles to sell them. The money was sent to the uncles held as prisoners of war.
Mr. and Mrs. Abell came to Buhl in 1919 from Stanberry, MO to visit their daughter. They were going to Florida but liked Buhl so well they stayed. Mr. Abell died in 1934 at the age of 86. Her other relatives include two grandchildren, Mrs. Frances Whitby, Berkeley, CA, and Mrs. Nora Johnston, Kent, WA and four Great-grandchildren.
No party is planned for Mrs. Abell on her 100th birthday. Mrs. McPherron says Mrs. Abell still likes to hear jokes and is quick to see the humor in them.
My Great Grandfather John Gasper Rhudy's sister who lived to 101 years.
She and her husband Homer Abell lived mostly in Colorado and lost several of their children in Colorado.
