Death: 1785

Italian painter and engraver, born in Florence. He migrated to Britain with his friend, the sculptor Joseph Wilton, in 1755. His friendship with William Chambers helped his reputation, and he was patronised by the Duke of Richmond among others. Becoming a member of the Royal Academy, he created designs for Buckingham and Somerset Houses, which were executed by such as Bacon, Nollekens and Bartolozzi (who became a lifelong friend). The State Coach he designed remains in use and can be seen in the Museum of London. He died in Hammersmith but was interred in the burial ground in the King's Road. Bartolozzi erected a moument to his memory.
