Engle, Ray Douglas

Ray Douglas Engle Aug. 17, 1932 - Mar. 22, 2008 Basham Funeral Care Graveside services for Ray Douglas Engle will be held at Union Cemetery on Friday afternoon, March 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Ray was born in El Centro, CA on August 17, 1932 to Shelby and Mollie Engle. He had a brother, Dale and sisters, Ruth Harris Rivas and Jackie Smith. The family moved to Kern County in 1939 where he attended local schools before joining the National Guard and then the U.S. Army. He proudly served during the Korean Conflict with the 101st Airborne, honorably discharged in 1952. He married Betty Jo Douglas and she and their unborn child died in 1955. He married Peggy Dial in 1956 and raised six children. A self taught master mechanic, big or small, he worked them all. He was co-owner of the Pit Stop, specializing in foreign car repair in the 1960's. He rode motorcycles, built fuel injected dragsters, worked on heavy equipment, and with Baker Sand he was a supervisor, happily working off-shore. An avid hunter, he loved camping with friends and family, his involvement with the Jr. Rodeo and his boys, and he was always the first to offer his services on any home or garden project, cold beer in hand. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and great granddaughter, Addie Jo. He is survived by his former wife, Peggy Dial Emerson; daughters, Jewell Ogle (Skip) and Candace Engle-Claxton (Gary); sons, Ray D. Engle Jr. (Michelle), Anthony Engle (Paulette) and step-son, Michael Pruitt (Arleen); nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He fought long and hard, but in the end Dad, you made it home. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ha of Kaiser, Optimal Care and Optimal Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ray to Optimal Hospice. For additional service information, please contact Basham Funeral Care at 873-8200.
