A Wisconsin Pioneer in Photography:
Henry was born the eldest son of George H. and Harriet A. Bennett. The year after his birth, his family moved to Brattleboro, Vermont.
In 1857, he came to Kilbourn City (now known as Wisconsin Dells) with his father and uncle. The three of them did carpentry work, and a year later, Henry's father brought the rest of the family from Brattleboro to Kilbourn, where they made their home.
Henry enlisted in Captain Vanderpool's company on September 8, 1861 at Delton, Wisconsin. The company was later commanded by Captain Gillispie of the Twelfth Wisconsin volunteer infantry. He served three years and two months as a private, and then mustered out at the Harvey hospital in Madison, Wisconsin on November 8, 1864. He participated in several battles, including the siege of Vicksburg. He accidentally discharged his gun and suffered a wounded right hand at Paducah, Kentucky, in 1864.
In the spring of 1865, he and his brother partnered in photography and bought Leroy Gates' business in Kilbourn. The business was located on Broadway Street, on a corner now occupied by a gas station. Henry's specialty was the reproduction of landscapes, particularly in the Wisconsin Dells area. He became interested in landscape photography because of the rock formations along the Wisconsin River. He constructed his first landscape camera out of cigar boxes. His brother returned to Brattleboro the following spring.
On January 22, 1866, Henry married Frances Irene Douty. They had three children: Harriet M., Ashley C., and Nellie I. Frances died August 28, 1884.
On March 25, 1890, Henry married Evaline Helen Marshall. They had two children: Miriam Eva and Ruth Noel.

Henry Hamilton Bennett passed away January 1, 1908, after about a year of failing health. His photographs and the high quality of his work have brought many visitors to the scenic Wisconsin Dells.
