Notation: Spelled "Syrus" on the gravestone.

Cyrus Lyon was born in 1821 in New York state, possibly Chenango county. He ventured west and settled in Moscow (Muscatine county) Iowa.

For awhile he was a teacher at the Sugar Creek School in southern Cedar county Iowa, and the 1860 census has him living with a farming family with the last name of Weed.

On November 14, 1862 at age 41, Cyrus enlisted for duty and was placed in Company B, 37th Infantry Regiment IA during the Civil War. This regiment was known as the "Graybeard Regiment" as it was made up of able-bodied men aged 45 or over that wanted to do their part in the war but were too old for active combat. Some of the men were over 60. Cyrus played the fife and was listed as "musician". His regiment didn't fight any battles but lost two or three men in skirmishes. The company mustered out on May 24, 1865.

Cyrus married Maria Hochstetler Adams (b. 1837) on December 28, 1871. Cyrus and Maria (pronounced ma-ri-ah) are pictured together at right. [Note: Maria had been previously married to Almiran Adams, who died in 1868. They had four children together. See her memorial site which is linked below for details.]

Cyrus and Maria had two sons together:

Cyrus Field Lyon (b. 9/14/1872, d. 4/14/1948)
Charles Browning Lyon (b. 9/11/1875, d. 4/11/1876)

The 1880 census recorded him as being 58 years old, his wife Maria was 40 years, and his son Cyrus as 7 years. His occupation is listed as a "R R Ticket Agent"

Cyrus, age 68, died on March 12, 1889 and was buried in Moscow IA, next to his son Charles, who died at the age of 7 months. Maria was awarded Cyrus' Civil War pension from his service in the "Graybeard Regiment" on June 24, 1889.
