While in high school, he worked with his brothers at Champion Paper Mill in Hamilton. After he graduated, he enlisted in the Air Force where he served with the Army of Occupation. While on leave in Germany he met Maria Huber. They were married on December 31, 1953 in Hamilton, Ohio. He was stationed at Hahn AFB in Germany from 1961 to 1963, when he transfered to McDill AFB in Tampa, Florida. Charles continued to serve in the Air Force until his retirement in 1970. In 1967, after 4 children and 15 years of marriage, while living in Tampa, Maria and Charles divorced.
After retiring from the Air Force, Charles traveled the country spending time with his many brothers & sister. While living with his sister, Eileen in Hamilton, Ohio, he decided to move back to the Florida to be closer to his children and spend time with his old friends from his days at McDill. He sought the help of one of his nephews, Randall Ziegler, Eileen's son, who drove him to Bradenton were they shared a trailer until his death on August 17, 1974.
Charles is buried in Greenwood Cemetery about 4 blocks from the house he lived in when he was born.
