John William Brown was born in Whittier,Los Angeles, California on October 23, 1923. He attended Central Grammar School in Montebello and after finishing there went to Garfield High School.
John was employed in the press room of the Whittier Gazette for about two years preceding his enlistment in the U.S. Navy. The news of young Brown's death brought sorrow to the staff of the Gazette.
He enlisted in the Navy early in January, 1941, and on June 18 went to San Francisco. From that city he went "some where in the Pacific" to serve his country. John was in the mine corps division of the U.S. Navy and was rated as a second-class seaman.
A telegram signed by Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs, Chief of Naval Personnel, brought the sad news to his family.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Brown, his brother, Robert Lee Brown, his sister, Carol Ann of East Montebello; his grandmothers, Mrs. Melvina Carr, of Whittier and Mrs. Alice Cahill of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. John William Brown, 224 Fir Street, East Montebello. A sister, Alice preceded him in death in 1932.
