In 1850 John Hughs, husband of Mary, and Captain Marlin, husband of Matilda, traveled to California to search for gold. Marlin died on the way and Hughs reached California, but died there. Talitha was married to Robert Brackney and their farm is listed in the 1850 census as being very close to the farm where Matilda and Mary lived with their children; presumably the census was taken after Hughs & Marlin had left for California. The Brackneys later moved to Buchanen County MO. Robert Brackney died 12-25-1868.
