Ben owned and operated BB drugs at the SW corner of Truman Road & Ash, Independence, MO. He was a son of Harry and Ida Rebecca Bloustine, both Russian Immigrants. Ben graduated from Central High School in 1924, and in his youth he worked for a drugstore. He wanted to be a medical doctor but medical school was beyond the reach of his working class family (his father was a meat cutter) so he attended pharmacy school which, at that time, was a two year course of study. I don't know where he worked after graduating, but in 1933 he married Ida Dora Hoffman whose parents were also Russian immigrants. Ben & Ida had one daughter, Paula, born circa 1937 who is now Paula Matta, living in New York.

Around 1934 Ben purchased Maywood Drugs which was located in the building at the SE Corner of Truman Road (then Van Horn Rd.) and Ash which had closed down in the Great Depression. Sometime, Ben purchased a house at the SW corner of Truman & Ash. He and his family lived in it until around 1947 when he had the house moved to 1205 Maywood and had the building for BB Drugs built in its place. Ben & Ida lived in the house at 1205 Maywood; Ida died in 1957.

Ben remarried sometime after the death of Ida; several years later Ben sold the Store to another owner. The store went out of business around 2005. Ben was at one time part owner of the nursing home on the NE corner of the intersection.

I (your contributor) worked for Ben in the 1950s while attending high school & college; Ben even gave me a set of keys so that I could sweep up early in the morning before going to school. Ben gave many neighbourhood teens their first jobs. I thought he was a nice man.
