Portland- Margaret Ellen Adams, 85, departed this life peacefully on January 24, 2013 at St. Joseph's Manor, where she had been a resident for the last seven months. One of identical twin daughters born to Eugene and Margaret (Butts) Sylvester, she was born on June 5, 1927 in Hartford Connecticut.

At the age of 15 Margaret and her twin sister Marjorie had to quit school to support their family, however, that didn't stop Margaret, from getting her diploma. At the age of 75 she enrolled in Portland Adult Education and received her G.E.D. She worked for McCullen's 5 & 10, Standard Romper, Sold Avon, worked in the cafeteria for the telephone company, and finally was a receptionist for Weight Watchers. She loved to knit mittens, hats, scarves, afghans, and blankets for babies. She donated hundreds of mittens and hats to the Preble St. Resource center and to local churches each and every year, and never identified who she was. She always said she was doing it "from her heart". She was the embodiment of pure love, and had a generous spirit, a smile and kind word for everyone. She was adopted by many as a grandmother.

She was a true angel on this earth with a compassionate heart. She inspired us to be better human beings and in her eyes everyone was good.

She met her husband George when he returned home from WWII. For George it was "love at first sight". They fell in love and soon married at the Preble Street Church. They stayed active as a couple working for Weight Watchers, playing golf, and participating in bowling leagues. Margaret's strength was demonstrated as a two time breast cancer survivor.

She was predeceased by her loving twin sister Marjorie Driscoll, and sister Grace. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, George, two sons, George Jr. and his wife Alona of Port Orchard WA., Peter and his wife Lorrie of Hollis Center, six grandchildren, Eliseo Adams and his wife Amanda of Florida, Sarah Sanborn and her fiancé Ryan Hodgkin of Sebago, Lacey Leighton of Portland, Ryan Adams and his fiancée Ashley Stowe of Auburn, Jeremy Sanborn, and his wife Kelly of Buxton, and Kristen Malone of Buxton, and nine great-grandchildren, Jason, Leann, Ben, Lillian, Jordan, Anabelle, Lilly Grace, and her two namesakes Mollie Ellen, and Hannah Margaret, and one sister Barbara. Margaret's family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the love and care they received from the many caregivers at St. Joes. She considered you her extended family.

Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Sunday January 27, 2013 from 1:00-4:00 PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A funeral will be held at the funeral home on Monday January 28, 2013 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Don Drake officiating.

Interment will be on Tuesday January 29, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland. Donations can be made in Margaret's memory to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 602, Brewer ME 04412
