Sherman was the oldest child of William Foster and Henrietta Crail, and was born in North Muddy Township in Jasper Co, IL. He was 19 years old when his father William died in a snow storm in Oregon. Sherman's brother Charles Lawrence Foster and his brother-in-law Charles Edgar Kirkham shared a professional photography studio. For a brief spell, he tried his hand at photography, but didn't take to it. He loved flowers and growing roses. Before he was married he made a trip to Oregon to see his Uncle Tom and Uncle Frank who lived there. He and his wife Effie lived in the house of her mother (Henrietta Crail Foster who died there 3 months short of her 90th birthday in 1933). The house was passed on to his daughter Bernice Sherman was survived by his wife, Bernice, 5 grandchildren, 1 gr-gr-granddaughter, 2 sisters Mrs Claude Moffitt [Winnifred Foster Kirkham] of Lewisville, IN, and Mrs Wilmer Shamhasrt [Olive "Ollie" Foster] of Granite City, and 1 brother Charles Lawrence Foster of Hillsboro. Preceding him in death were 1 daughter [Oretha], 3 [Augusta Foster Kirkham, Evaline "Eva" Foster Calvert, Frances "Fannie" Foster Clagg], and 2 brothers [Arthur Garfield Foster in Oregon, and Harry Franklin Foster who died at 18 months of age]. Sherman died in North Muddy Township on 28 Nov 1942. Funeral services were held at Headyville Church on Monday 30 Nov 1942. Clergyman: Rev. J.M. Chesnut. Pall bearers: Howard Chesnut, John Chesnut, Earnie Clagg,Bruce Morgan, William Galloway, and Summers Keene. Flower bearers: Goldie Kibler, Virginia Garner, Beulah French, Dorothy Davis. Buried at Headyville-McQueen Cemetery.
