Neal Burris
Birth: Mar. 11, 1929
Council Grove
Morris County
Kansas, USA
Death: Jan. 17, 1994
Jefferson County
Kentucky, USA

In the first half of his musical career, Neal Burris was a country and western song writer, vocalist, and guitar player. He was known as the "Shuffling Cowboy", for the way he shuffled his feet while he sang and played his guitar on stage. His band was called "Neal Burris and His Melody Ramblers". He wrote and played guitar for other performers such as Pee Wee King, Billy Brown, White Mountain Bluegrass, and Porter Wagoner & the Wagonmasters. He co-wrote several songs for himself and other performers with his wife Ruby (Dunn) Burris.

He appeared on several radio programs and stations in the late forties and early fifties. He also appeared on the "Grand Ole Opry" on 1 December, 1951 and the television show "Old American Barn Dance" in 1953.

He was signed as a solo artist to several different recording labels, including:
-Red Barn Recording Company
-King Records
-Columbia Records

In the mid to late 1950's, Neal Burris contracted a throat infection which ended his career as a vocalist.

During the second half of his music career, Neal played upright bass at live shows with several jazz ensembles in Louisville, KY. He was a well-respected jazz musician by all who knew him and heard him play.

When he wasn't playing music, he worked at Rodes, a men's clothing store in Louisville for many years. Neal spent the last few years of his life performing with friends and working for one of his bandmates at a Louisville company dealing with audio equipment and a recording studio called Falk Audio.

Neal suffered a heart-attack in January 1994 while shoveling snow at his home in Louisville, from which he did not recover. His wife Ruby (Dunn) Burris passed away in July of 2013.
